Gender Who? A Trans/Nonbinary/Gender-Nonconforming Celebration of the Whoniverse is a charity anthology of stories and illustrations in the universe(s) of Doctor Who. Previously offered in a limited-edition paperback, Gender Who? returns this time as a PDF version only!
We neither own nor claim any copyright on Doctor Who characters. Nor do we seek to supersede the copyright of any characters, who remain the properties of their respective owners.
As a not-for-profit endeavor, Gender Who? will donate all proceeds to Migrant Justice, a U.S.-based nonprofit that uplifts the farmworker community and partners with community organizations to promote economic justice and human rights.
Gender Who? is about connection. Some of that connection is personal and social. Many aspects of Doctor Who explore, encourage, and even promote characters and themes of gender fluidity. Many contributors to this anthology enjoy Doctor Who in part because we can find characters like us who represent our own experiences. And, no matter who they are, all authors and artists in Gender Who? enjoy chatting, collaborating, and sharing the love with other Doctor Who fans. We connect to the show by seeing ourselves in it, and we connect to others who do as well.
This anthology, which is divided into nonfiction essays, artwork, and fiction, is also about creative connections. The nonfiction essays make thought-provoking links between specific Doctor Who stories, gender nonconforming themes, and, often, the writers’ own experiences. The illustrations for the essays, which treat the same subject in a different medium, exemplify a different kind of connection. Where essays and illustrators are by different contributors, the connection is a dialogue—two fans sharing their interpretations of the same topic.
The second section, artwork, explores connection from a different angle. Several pieces depict gender fluidity across time or incarnations. Others show gender-nonconforming characters forging bonds with each other. Still others feature gender-nonconforming characters and the joy of their self-expression.
The final section, fiction, builds on many of the themes prevalent in the artwork. Light and humorous or more serious and dramatic, the stories and excerpts show gender-nonconforming characters at all stages of gender exploration. Wherever they are in their journeys, the characters connect with others like them. Everyone in this anthology always finds friends (or, in the Doctor’s case, frenemies) and community to commiserate with.
I hope that you enjoy reading Gender Who? May it prompt you to make personal, social, creative, and/or analytical connections of your own!
